The 2023 June Sea Ice Outlook () Report is now available online. This report, developed by Sea Ice Prediction Network () team members, provides an open process for those interested in Arctic sea ice to share predictions and ideas. The 2023 effort is supported with funds from award #1331083.
For the 2023 June report, 38 contributions were received that included pan-Arctic predictions. Of those contributions, 10 included predictions for the Alaska region, 9 included predictions for pan-Antarctic, and 15 included September mean sea-ice extent anomalies. Additionally we received 16 pan-Arctic forecasts using spatial methods. This report includes discussions of contributed forecasts, Arctic sea-ice extent anomalies, and current Arctic and Alaska regional conditions.
For the pan-Arctic, the median June Outlook value for September 2023 sea-ice extent is 4.54 million square kilometers with quartiles of 4.34 and 4.90 million square kilometers. This is nearly the same as last year's June median forecast for September, but higher than the three previous years (2019–2021).
