Atmosphere and Modeling Joint August 24 Meeting (Recording)

  • Topic: Towards Improving Arctic Reanalyses: Focus on Atmospheric Moisture
  • Presentations: 
    • PolarMERRA: A Collaborative Effort for NASA’s Polar Reanalyses (Chelsea Parker)
    • Evaluation of Simulated Cloud Water in Low Clouds over the Beaufort Sea in Arctic System Reanalysis using ARISE Airborne In Situ Observations (Brant Dodson)
  • Highlights: 
    • The current candidate model for PolarMERRA reduces biases including positive winter temperature, turbulent fluxes, evaporation, and precipitation bias in MERRA and MERRA-2.
    • In a project to evaluate errors in cloud and cloud water predictions from Arctic System Reanalysis (ASR) using the data from Arctic Radiation-IceBridge Sea and Ice Experiment (ARISE), ASR under-represented cloud water and conditions favorable for high-water clouds.

Sea Ice and Modeling Joint August 27th Meeting (Recording)

  • Topic: Sea Ice Outlook: Approaching the minimum
  • Presentations:

    • Pan-Arctic Ice Ocean Modeling and Assimilation System (PIOMAS)” (Jinlun Zhang, University of Washington)
    • US Navy Earth System Prediction Capability (ESPC)” (Rick Allard, NRL-Stennis,)
  • Highlights: This meeting brought together several sea ice modelers working on various models with a focus on recent updates and the 2020 season predictions.

Glaciers & Sea Level August 13 Meeting (Recording)

  • Topic: Arctic Glaciers, Greenland, and Sea Level Research Needs
  • Presentations:

  • Highlights: This meeting focus on research needs for and ice and brought together many perspectives on priorities and ways forward.

  • Topic: Degradation of cold ice-rich permafrost
  • Presentations: 
    • Fast response of cold ice-rich permafrost in northeast Siberia to a warming climate - Jan Nitzbon (AWI)
  • Highlights: This meeting explored the question “how do ice-rich permafrost landscapes in northeast Siberia respond to a warming climate?”
    • CryoGrid3 effective tool to investigate ice-rich permafrost
    • Simulation of substantially increased degradation through thermokarst
    • Small-scale lateral processes exert crucial feedbacks
    • ESMs lack key complexities of permafrost terrain
