The leadership of the Diversity and Inclusion Working Group has been discussing concrete steps on how we can best support the Arctic research community, and more specifically our Black and Indigenous colleagues, during this time. The leadership of the Diversity and Inclusion Working Group consists of no Black or Indigenous members. We want to ensure that all those in Arctic research and policy are the ones doing the work to move forward efforts on inclusivity and equity in Arctic research. That being said, we acknowledge that as much as we read, see, and listen to the experiences of our Black and Indigenous colleagues, those of us without those identities will never fully understand the experience of being Black and/or Indigenous in Arctic research.
To that end, the Diversity & Inclusion Working Group is seeking self-nominations from members of the Arctic research community (in particular, Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) to become co-leads of the team. If you are interested, please submit this form by August 10th. For the past year and a half, the Diversity and Inclusion Working Group has established some input and goals with initial activities, but now, we would like to revisit our Terms of Reference and future plans with expanded leadership.
In addition, in recognition of the importance of diversity in science, we wanted to create a space for folks to share resources and start conversations about diversity & Arctic science. This post on Collaborations on Diversity in Science Resources is a space where we are encouraging community members to both share and discover such resources on allyship, actions, education around racial issues in science, and other relevant resources.
Finally, the Diversity & Inclusion Working Group co-leads and leadership in general are welcome to any advice from the community on what our team could do or actions we should prioritize moving forward in light of the current situation. Please contact Allen Pope (allen.pope@iasc.info), Olivia Lee (oalee@alaska.edu), and Colleen Strawhacker (colstraw@nsf.gov).
