As climatic conditions in the Arctic continue to change, so do the types of disturbances shaping these ecosystems. Some disturbances – such as fire – were present under pre-industrial conditions and are now undergoing significant regime changes. Others, however, are now emerging in regions where they were previously absent. Modeling the geographic expansion of such disturbances is critical to understanding the future of the high latitudes. In this session, two scientists presented their work on modeling the expansion of beaver and spruce bark beetle range and habitat in Alaska.
