When scientists think of field safety in polar regions, they often prepare for cold conditions, heavy machinery, bugs, and bears. However, it is increasingly clear that threats posed to scientists often fall outside of those categories and can result from interpersonal interactions. This workshop will help researchers develop tools to conduct fieldwork that promotes the physical, social, and mental wellbeing of team members, taking special care to acknowledge the experiences and needs of underrepresented communities. This workshop will be based on similar events hosted by Arctic and Biogeosciences. Participants will join small breakout rooms to discuss a series of “what-if” scenarios on topics including severe accidents, illness, and interpersonal interactions. While these scenarios are focused on fieldwork, the skills we will practice are broadly useful for all scientists and engineers.
The workshop will be held on Zoom on Monday, April 27th from 10am-12pm AKT / 2pm-4pm ET.
