The ongoing development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) provides promising pathways for a variety of applications in Arctic modeling and observational research. The MOMP team is organizing a webinar series that explores applications of AI in Arctic research and discuss areas of promise, as well as potential limitations and cautionary tales in both the modeling and observational research landscape.

In our first webinar, WenWen Li (Arizona State University) presented highlights from her work using AI to extract features from satellite images, with applications for permafrost thaw and sea ice.  William Gregory (Princeton University) presented highlights from his work using AI to improve sea ice and ocean models.  Both speakers discussed their thoughts on the areas of highest promise and potential limitations or concerns in AI for Arctic research and will share some AI resources and tools.  During the discussion period, we will created a Google document available for the community to share additional AI resources, ideas for future meetings in the webinar series, and any follow-up actions.
