Earth System Models (ESMs) are invaluable tools to explore the causes and impacts of the rapid changes that are taking place in the Arctic. These changes are due to a combination of external forcing (e.g., anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gasses and aerosols) and internal climate variability. The last decade has seen the emergence of Large Ensembles of ESM simulations, which have proven instrumental in understanding and quantifying the contributions of internal variability and external forcing to climate variability and change. In this session, we heard from two experts who are using ESM Large Ensembles to understand the processes responsible for rapid Arctic change.
