SUMMARY:Arctic Extremes Series - Arctic Atmospheric Rivers: Arctic Systems Interactions September 2026
DESCRIPTION:Arctic Extremes Series - Arctic Atmospheric Rivers: Arctic Systems Interactions September 2026 Sep 22, 2026 2 - 3 pm Eastern Daylight Time This Arctic Systems Interactions webinar series aims to explore the characteristics, mechanisms, primary drivers, and predictability of different types of Arctic extremes. Through this series, we examine the variability and trends, model representation/prediction, and the impacts of various Arctic extremes as well as their interconnected nature amongst Arctic systems. In this fifth meeting of the series, we heard from two experts on the topic of Arctic atmospheric rivers. Arctic atmospheric rivers (ARs) are long, narrow corridors of intense moisture transport from lower latitudes into the high Arctic, resulting in pronounced surface warming events and significant precipitation. Arctic ARs are considered a prominent factor influencing Arctic weather extremes, which can disrupt local ecosystems, transportation, and energy infrastructure.
