DESCRIPTION:Arctic Extremes Series - Cold Air Outbreaks: Arctic Systems Interactions July Meeting 2026  Jul 16, 2026 3 - 4 pm Eastern Daylight Time  This Arctic Systems Interactions webinar series aims to explore the characteristics, mechanisms, primary drivers, and predictability of different types of Arctic extremes. Through this series, we will examine the variability and trends, model representation/prediction, and the impacts of various Arctic extremes as well as their interconnected nature amongst Arctic systems.  In this fourth meeting of the series, we heard from two experts on the topic of cold air outbreaks—frigid Arctic air masses spilling southward into the mid-latitudes. Such extreme meteorological events drive winter cold snaps across North America, Europe and Asia, posing significant challenges to infrastructure, transportation, and public safety, highlighting the powerful connection between the dynamic systems.
