DESCRIPTION:Traversing Knowledge with Graph Databases -- June 2026 Data Management Collaboration Team meeting  Jun 23, 2026 1 - 2 pm Eastern Daylight Time  Researchers increasingly rely on data originating from multiple disciplines, institutions, repositories, and information systems. While traditional databases are effective for storing and managing information, connecting data across organizational and disciplinary boundaries remains a significant challenge. Complex research questions often require integrating datasets, publications, geographic information, instruments, projects, organizations, and researchers that are described using different standards and stored in separate systems. This presentation introduced graph databases and semantic technologies as approaches for representing and exploring relationships among diverse sources of information. Participants learned how Linked Data principles and the Semantic Web have evolved to support a web of interconnected data, enabling greater interoperability, discovery, and reuse of research resources. Topics included the Resource Description Framework (RDF), triple statements, Uniform Resource Identifiers (URIs), vocabularies and ontologies, and SPARQL, the standard query language for graph data. The session also explored how these technologies are being used to build knowledge graphs that connect people, places, concepts, datasets, publications, and organizations across domains.  Through demonstrations of Wikidata Query Service and GraphDB, attendees saw how graph-based approaches can support data integration, knowledge discovery, and interdisciplinary research.
